Unfortunately, simply telling your kids that drugs are bad for you isn’t going to work. Telling them that taking drugs is morally wrong, sinful, can get them into trouble, wind them up in jail, and so on and so on – all the hundreds of general things parents could say to their kids – also don’t work.

Prescription Painkillers Leading to Heroin and Overdose Deaths

Posted under Heroin, Painkillers, Prescription Drugs

Heroin is a scary drug. It conjures up all the images of everything that’s bad about drug addiction. And according to a recent government study, it’s use has doubled in the last 10 years. Why? Primarily because of prescription painkillers. Where? In the suburbs.

Last year, one county in New Jersey – with a relatively small population of about 100,000 – saw 28 people die of OxyContin overdose. That’s a lot of people for a place that size, and most of them were under 22.

A lot of loss. The family, friends, teachers, employers, co-workers, classmates, local shop-keepers – so many people must have known these young people.

“Every part of Bergen County is touched in some way, shape or form by the heroin epidemic,” said Lt. Thomas Dombrosk of the county prosecutor’s office.

What he is clear to point out is that for many heroin users, the path beings with prescription painkillers. more…
