Posted under Buprenorphine, Drug Rehab, Heroin, Intervention, Marijuana, Methadone, OxyContin

There’s probably nothing worse than having a kid, spouse, parent or close friend on drugs and spending most of your time worrying about whether they’re safe and whether you’re going to get a phone call giving you bad news.

Of course, the best solution to drug addiction is prevention, not treatment. And there are many things you can do to help prevent them from getting into drugs.

A lot of people dispute the disease theory of addiction. And for good reason: Although the drugs can definitely cause physical dependency, true addiction involves a mental and emotional element – it’s a symptom that the person has things going on in their life that they don’t know how to deal with. more…

When someone’s in the ER to save their life after they overdosed on drugs, it’s the perfect time to get them started on getting the addiction help they need. Hospital ERs aren’t generally set up that way, but I’m hoping that will change once they find out about a study done at Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut where getting people into treatment was very successful! more…

If Someone You Care About Needs Help – Get an Intervention

Posted under Alcohol, Drug Rehab, Intervention

I recently read an article about a mother whose daughter died from an overdose of painkillers. Mom knew her daughter was an addict – and had been for years – but at the time of her death she was already 29 and long past the age where her mother could force her to get addiction help.

Now there is a law in her home State – which she pushed through – allowing family members to more or less commit their family to a full drug rehab.

If she has anything to do with it, other States will follow.

But what do you do if you have a loved one on drugs and do not live in a State where you can force them to get help? more…

Mitch Winehouse, Amy’s dad, has written a book: Amy, My Daughter, to be released on June 26, 2012. How to Get Someone You Care About to Get Addiction Help

Posted under Addiction Help, Drug Rehab, Intervention, LSD

I recently read an article about ‘enabling’ people who do drugs. According to the article, family members are most likely to actually keep someone they care about addicted instead of getting them the addiction help they need. Why, because the addicts play on their emotions. And, as the author of the article pointed out, addicts more…

It’s hard for someone who doesn’t have an alcohol problem to figure out why some who obviously does have a problem won’t even admit they need addiction help – let alone actually get it. Difficult – is the only word I can think of to describe what it takes to get someone help to overcome a drug and/or alcohol addiction. Most People Don’t Admit They Need Addiction Help

One of the biggest barriers to overcoming alcohol and drug addiction and abuse is that most people don’t realize, or admit, they have a problem and, therefore, don’t try to get addiction help.
