Can This Powerful Advertisement Stop Parental Alcohol Abuse?
Is anyone more hurt by alcoholics than their children? A new ad, entitled The Orphanage and produced and airing in Finland, has had half a million views on youtube and is well worth watching for anyone who has an alcoholic parent in their life.
The ad’s caption reads:
“What if children could choose their parents?
“Orphanage. A place where hopeful parents could visit and offer a loving home to orphan children. What if the whole situation would be turned upside down? Welcome to The Orphanage of adults.
“We all know that children can’t choose their parents. But what if they could? Would that change the way we as parents behave?”
The group that put together the ad, a non-profit organization known as Lasinen lapsuus – which means Fragile childhood in English – has also launched a facebook page inviting people to comment on their experiences with alcoholism.
It is filled with heartbreaking stories from children of alcoholics, including adults whose own children do not spend time with their grandparents who still drink and can’t be trusted with the kids.
According to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, “Alcohol is the most commonly used addictive substance in the United States- 17.6 million people, or one in every 12 adults, suffer from alcohol abuse or dependence along with several million more who engage in risky, binge drinking patterns that could lead to alcohol problems.” But we really don’t need anyone to tell us this – we see it every day.
Drinkers often don’t see the effect their alcohol abuse creates on others, including their children.
If someone in your life is a drinker, a parent, grandparent, perhaps even your own son or daughter, and have children or grandchildren, show them this ad, and show them the comments on the facebook page. If they get it, if they want to do something about their alcohol abuse to help the children in their life, call us to get help.
It’s important to get an alcoholic into an alcohol rehab program when they see that they need it. If you delay, you risk them changing their mind, putting it off, and finding excuses not to stop.
Children of alcoholics lose their childhood. Do what you can to help them, and their parents. Watch this ad, and spread the word.
