Researchers from McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, set out to investigate gender differences between men and women attending the clinics. They recruited 503 men and women from 13 methadone clinics in Ontario. It was found that 52% of women and 38% of men had their first contact with opioid drugs as a result of doctor-prescribed painkillers. Opioid painkillers include prescription medicines such as oxycontin and codeine, as well as illicit drugs such as heroin.

Chief Deputy Mike Maurer said abuse of opiates, including heroin, is low in this area. There are more issues with overdose of methadone, a drug to reduce cravings for heroin and other opiates, than there are for heroin itself, he said. And without a base of local patients, the officials worried the clinic could attract customers from farther away. Considering the street value of methadone, the county could import a drug problem.
